Deerfield Beach, Fla. – Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante, mixed martial arts and current Strikeforce competitor, traveled to his home of Brazil several months ago to join Brazilian rap sensation Pregador Luo, in the filming of his new music video “Subindo a Montanha,” which translates in English into “Climbing the Mountain.”
Luo, the leader of the gospel group “Revelation 16,” released his first solo album in 2003. He is a mainstay in Brazilian pop culture and has won numerous awards over the years including the Hutuz award for Album of the Year and Best Hip Hop group and Best Rap Album (2006).
“It was an honor to be involved with Pregador Luo and Toddy Ivon, the video producer, and to have the opportunity to do this music video that involves MMA, hip hop and friendship,” said Cavalcante. “It was my mission to become the character ‘Blackzilian Eagle’ and to convey the motivational spirit in fighting adversity to reach the top. I wanted to send a good energy and a positive message to my fans and the people in Brazil.”
In an interview with Portal do Vale Tudo, a prominent MMA media source in Brazil, Luo explains the theme of “Climbing the Mountain” and the underlying message: "JZ is one of my closest friends inside MMA and with his beautiful career he brings to the video and the music the embodiment of someone who, day after the day, pays the price to be the best and to reach the top of the mountain full of challenges that is life.
“The ideal is that people realize that going up to the mountain we will face adversity and if we want to reach the top, wind, hunger, thirst and even our own weight and our own mind will be against us in some certain points,” Luo said. “It is these times that champions are born or dreams die. The goal is always to continue rising until we reach the top."
Cavalcante first met Luo in 2006 when the Brazilian gospel rapper was interested in creating an entire album dedicated to MMA. Luo wrote a song for JZ titled, “JZ Calvan, The Real Spartan,” and also wrote other pieces for Brazilian MMA greats including reigning UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva as well as Wanderlei Silva, Vitor Belfort and one of JZ’s fellow teammates Cosmo Alexandre.
Brazil is the birthplace of mixed martial arts and, in recent years, the sport has skyrocketed in popularity and mainstream acceptance. Anderson Silva endorses the international brand giants Nike and Burger King in Brazil, and the Ultimate Fighting Championship, the world’s largest promoter of the sport, sold out back to back UFC events in Rio de Janeiro. The UFC is currently in discussions with a stadium arena in Sao Paolo to hold a June 2012 rematch and championship title fight between Silva and Chael Sonnen, the number one contender in the division.
“Companies that are looking to grow their brands in Brazil should take a hard look at the athletes in the sport of mixed martial arts,” said Glenn Robinson, President of Authentic Sports Management and agent for Cavalcante. “In only a few years, MMA in Brazil has soared in and marketer and advertiser acceptance, and guys like Gesias Cavalcante, Braulio Estima, Jorge Santiago, Antonio Silva, Cosmo Alexandre, and Danillo and Yuri Villefort are popular and influential public figures in their native country.”
